What are the top altcoins other than Bitcoin (BTC)?

The definition of an altcoin has evolved since the early days of cryptocurrency. Long before, only BTC (Bitcoin) was considered as an altcoin. Today, there exists much broader assets (coins and tokens) serving the purpose of exchanges worldwide.

 

Note: Market cap or Market capitalization is one measurement of a company’s size.

 

1.      Bitcoin (BTC) Market cap: $570 billion

Price: $29,295

As the harbinger of the cryptocurrency era, created by a mysterious creator -Satoshi Nakamoto in the year 2009. When people talk about the cryptocurrency, they usual refer to Bitcoin.

 

2.     Ethereum (market cap: $223.3 billion)

Price: $1860

Of the $1.25 trillion that represents the total market cap, more than $200 billion is held in Eth (the biggest altcoin in the market).

 

3.     Binance Coin (BNB) (market cap: $37.4 billion)

Price: $237.77

BNB is a utility token that can be used to pay trading fees and get discounted trades on the Binance exchange.

 

4.     Tether (USDT) Market cap: $83 billion

Price: $1.00

Tether is called a stablecoin and is tied to the value of specific asset i.e., to the U.S. Dollar in Tether’s case. Tether often acts as a medium when traders move from one cryptocurrency to another. Rather than move back to dollars, they use Tether.

 

5.     XRP (Market cap: $36.2 billion)

Price: $0.7002

Used to facilitate exchanges of different currency types with digital technology and payment processing company Ripple Labs. XRP is the native cypto token of the Ripple network and it consistently lists among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap.

 

6.    USD Coin (USDC) Market cap: $27 billion

Price: $1.00

Like Tether, USD Coin is a stablecoin pegged to the dollar, meaning that it’s value should not fluctuate.

 

7.     Cardano (ADA) Market cap: $10.6 billion

Price: $ 0.3052

ADA was an early adopter of the PoS consensus mechanism, which speeds up transaction time by removing the competitive and energy-intensive problem-solving dimension of platforms like Bitcoin.

 

8.    Dogecoin (DOGE) Market cap: $10.6 billion

Price: $0.07849

Dogcoin is the orginal meme coin, famously started as a joke in 2013. It then rapidly evolved into a prominent cryptocurrency.

 

9.    Solana (SOL) Market cap: $9.4 billion

Price: $24.74

Developed to help power decentralized finance and apps as well as smart contracts, Solana runs on a unique hybrid PoS and Proof of History mechanism to process transactions quickly and securely.

 

10.  Tron (TRX) Market cap: $6.9 billion

Price: $0.08148

Tron was founded in Singapore in 2017. By December, 2021, what has started as a decentralized blockchain had grown into a fully decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). Today, Tron has more than 167 million accounts.

 

11.    Litecoin (LTC) Market cap: $6.6 billion

Price: $89.11

Litecoin is one of the original altcoins, designed to improve several of Bitcoin’s perceived shortcoming such as slow transaction processing speeds and mining monopolies.

 

12.   Polygon (MATIC) Market cap: $6.4 billion

Price: $0.7164

Polygon is an Ethereum-based scaling platform that allows developers to build dApps with low transaction fees. It allows people to process transaction on top of Ethereum network and this solution increases efficiency and saves tons of money on gas (transaction fees).

 

13.   Polkadot (DOT) Market cap: $6.2 billion

This altcoin powers the Polkadot ecosystem, where developers can build specific-purpose blockchains as spokes connecting to the main Polkadot blockchain hub.
